British researchers studied more than 1,000 men aged between 18 and 28 years old, and were asked about weekly consumption of alcohol drink. Participants also provided samples of their blood and semen to carry out these tests.
The study concluded that with excess alcohol consumed in a week deteriorated sperm quality.
If you have the habit of drinking a glass of wine or a beer once in a while, do not worry, you will not risk anything. We are talking about some heavy binge drinking of around 25 units per week for sperm to deteriorate considerably.
Why binge drinking is bad for your fertility and sperm?
For absolute alcoholics who drink beyond 40 units per week, the amount of sperm decreased by one third. Not only that but good quality sperms decreased by a shocking 51 percent.
While we occasionally have a BBQ or friends “catch up” it is important to know your units. It doesn’t have any pros other than the adrenaline and buzz it gives you. Certainly has a lot of cons to deal with, if we are not careful and watch our weekly consumption.
A good liver can flush out 1 unit of alcohol an hour, provided that it was fully functional. Any worn out liver with years of abuse probably would do half of that. So in a 2 – 3 hour session up in the bar or pub, it may seem joyful but in reality liver is continuing to work throughout that evening, to clear alcohol out of the system.
If you know anyone who is continuously drinking excessive amount of alcohol, maybe you could point them to this article to make them aware of the health risk and how it can reduce sperm.
